Virtual Private Server hosting in simple terms is the process of a computer with a node designed to operate as a server that hosts your web site files. The server loads up the files and videos to all people accessing your web domain name, if set up as a web server. Different hosting plans exist, ranging from shared hosting servers to semi-dedicated and dedicated servers. Virtual Dedicated Servers come in two choices: managed and unmanaged server hosting.

Managed Virtual Dedicated Servers

These servers come assisted by the company providing the server. As with all servers, you are provided administrative control, however a managed dedicated server has the benefit of the OS (Windows or Linux) security patches being applied for you. This ensures all patches are installed on time. The assisted services will also handle initial web server setup, security scans for viruses, and emergency services. If you are unfamiliar with servers and how to apply patches and troubleshoot problems like memory leaks, then this option is for you. When looking for these servers, they may also also be named an assisted service plan.

Unmanaged Dedicated Server Hosting

Unlike the dedicated servers where it is all managed for you, these are completely under your control. If you have a problem with your web server, you will have to do the troubleshooting. Many dedicated hosting service providers do still offer support with unmanaged dedicated hosting. Support is required for computer failures and other network problems within the hosting centre. After all, you can connect to the server, but you do not have physical access to the server, so you cannot troubleshoot hardware failures.

The experience of the purchaser will determine if a managed or unmanaged dedicated server solution is the best choice. Many dedicated hosting plans exist with various price points, but knowing if its managed dedicated server hosting or an unmanaged dedicated server will assist you in determining if that price warrants the service being provided. As with all purchases made, the higher the cost directly relates to the value of the dedicated server purchased, but not always.
